In India boom in movie theatres came in 1930’s when popularity of films was on an upsurge. Theatres were then built both by government and private funded parties to cope with the increasing demand of the consumers. Since then movies became an integral part of entertainment for any Indian.

Today, India is known as the world’s largest film industry in terms of number of films produced and ticket size backed by 12,000 theatre screens, 400 production houses and a huge viewership. The Industry produces over 1,000 movies per year in 20 different languages contributing USD 8.1 billion (c. INR 50,000 Cr.) to the country’s economy.

With the advent of megaplexes, from the recent emerging trends of single screens and multiplexes, theatre exhibition industry has undergone a drastic change. In 2010, domestic theatrical film exhibition revenues were estimated to be INR75 billion, contributing 74 per cent of the total revenues of the Indian filmed entertainment industry. With 70% of India’s total number of cinemas in South India, it also produces 82% of the total movies in the country. Though multiplex experience is hard to replicate through other digital media like Television, Internet Movies, Indians have now realized the potential of advanced home theatre systems which provide a similar movie experience. It is expected that the home theatre shall double in market size within next two years.
